Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a working naval base with five hundred years layered into it. The oldest dry dock in the world sits a short walk from Nelson’s flagship and a Tudor warship raised from the Solent seabed. Most visitors arrive on a coach timetable and see it all at a half-run, never quite stopping long enough to feel where they are standing.


HMS Victory is the anchor of any visit: Nelson’s flagship from Trafalgar, with the spot where he fell still marked on the deck. From there, it opens up. The Mary Rose Museum holds Henry VIII’s warship alongside thousands of objects raised with her, HMS Warrior 1860 lets you walk every deck of Britain’s first iron-hulled warship, and a harbour boat tour carries you out past the frigates and aircraft carriers of today’s fleet.


Step beyond the Dockyard and the city opens out. Climb the Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf Quays for a view across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, or wander the cobbled lanes of Old Portsmouth, where the Tudor Round Tower still guards the harbour mouth.
